Coco Comes Home

An apartment in Brooklyn was Coco’s second home. Her first home was a live poultry market where she was kept in a cage, her eggs collected and sold. A young man living in Brooklyn purchased her and took her home to the apartment he shares with his mother, and there she lived quite happily. Until . . . → Read More: Coco Comes Home

Pretty Little Chicken Coop

Just sharing this picture so that everybody can get a glimpse of the colorful circumstances in which the chickens and other animals at the sanctuary spend their days.

Apples and Chickens

A short post today to share a short thought. As most of you know, we recently relocated the sanctuary here to Vermont, and are lucky enough to have five apple trees and two peach trees on the property (not to mention 30 years of gardening by a master gardener who has left us with beauty . . . → Read More: Apples and Chickens

Rooster Rant

Suddenly, roosters are everywhere in the news, or so it seems. If you believe what you read, they are the biggest threat to peace and quiet since rocket grenades and jackhammers. However, one thing does . . . → Read More: Interspecies Connections

Rooster Rehab on YouTube

Earlier this year, the Eastern Shore Sanctuary welcomed a small number of roosters and hens who had been confiscated from a squalid hole-in-the-wall where they had been held for purposes of cockfighting and, in the case of the hens, breeding. The local Humane Society that took in the birds and placed them with us made . . . → Read More: Rooster Rehab on YouTube

Regulating Cows

On 17 April, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that greenhouse gases do endanger public health and welfare and, thus, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane emissions will be regulated from now on. As the meat industry organ Meating Place reported, “a collective shiver went down the back of animal agriculture” at that news.

Why? Because . . . → Read More: Regulating Cows
