This just in from the ASPCA Advocacy Center (abridged for ease of reading):
State-level bills are pending in Annapolis that would place all control regarding the treatment of farm animals in the hands of the farm industry!
RIGHT NOW, act to defeat Senate Bill 254 and House Bill 676, which aim to create a Livestock and Poultry Care Advisory Board that would have total control over the acceptable treatment of millions of animals. This board would not be required to accept input by citizens, animal control experts or even the Maryland General Assembly when deciding how our animals should treated. All its decisions would be final.
During a recent hearing on this bill, a representative from the State was asked if humane treatment would be considered when establishing care standards. His response was that such a concern was not relevant to animals raised for food.
Needless to say, this has the potential to turn a horrific situation even MORE horrific.
What You Can Do
Please help prevent the creation of this Livestock and Poultry Advisory Board, which, if established, will have the power to sanction any kind of treatment to farm animals it deems appropriate—no matter how inhumane.
